Understand the process. Organise your evidence. Prepare your team.
An NDIS Certification Audit is about more than having a folder of policies.
Your auditor will want to understand how your organisation operates, how your systems protect participants and whether your policies and procedures are being followed in everyday practice.
The right preparation can help you approach your audit with greater clarity, structure and confidence.
What is an NDIS Certification Audit?
A Certification Audit applies to providers delivering one or more higher-risk or more complex NDIS supports and services.
The registration groups included in your application or renewal determine which type of audit you are required to complete. Where an application includes registration groups requiring both verification and certification, the provider will generally need to complete a Certification Audit.
Certification Audits are conducted by an Approved Quality Auditor and assess whether the provider meets the applicable NDIS Practice Standards. Approved Quality Auditors are independent auditing bodies and are not part of the NDIS Quality and Safeguards Commission.
You may require a Certification Audit if you provide supports such as:
- Assistance with daily personal activities
- High intensity daily personal activities
- Support coordination and life transition supports
- Specialist positive behaviour support
- Group or shared living supports
- Development of daily living and life skills
- Early childhood supports
- Other higher-risk or more complex services
Your Initial Scope of Audit, issued as part of the registration process, should identify the audit type and NDIS Practice Standards modules that apply to your organisation.
Important update for Supported Independent Living providers
New Supported Independent Living Practice Standards commenced on 1 July 2026.
These standards place additional emphasis on participant voice, rights, freedoms, supported decision-making and the quality and safety of supports delivered within a participant’s home. SIL providers should ensure they are working from the current standards and guidance when preparing for an audit.
Build your Certification Audit documentation system
Preparing your documentation from scratch can quickly become overwhelming.
The Certification Audit Documentation System provides a structured collection of editable policies, procedures, forms, registers and audit-preparation tools designed to help NDIS providers build their compliance framework.
Use the templates as a professional starting point, customise them for your organisation and put the documented systems into practice before your audit.
Designed to help you:
- Organise your compliance documentation
- Address key areas of the NDIS Practice Standards
- Prepare evidence for Stage 1
- Strengthen implementation before Stage 2
- Identify documentation gaps
- Create more consistent operational systems
- Reduce the time spent writing documents from scratch
Frequently asked questions
Is an NDIS Certification Audit the same as a Verification Audit?
No. Verification generally applies to providers delivering lower-risk or lower-complexity supports. Certification applies to higher-risk or more complex supports and involves both a desktop and onsite stage.
How do I know which audit I need?
The registration groups included in your application determine the audit type. Your Initial Scope of Audit should identify the audit and modules that apply to your organisation.
Who can conduct an NDIS Certification Audit?
Only an Approved Quality Auditor can assess a provider against the NDIS Practice Standards for registration purposes. The NDIS Commission publishes the current list of approved auditing bodies.
Are policies enough to pass an NDIS audit?
Policies are an important part of the evidence, but the auditor will also assess how your systems are implemented. During Stage 2, this may include reviewing records, interviewing workers and participants, visiting locations and observing service delivery.
Can I use policy templates for my audit?
Templates can provide a useful starting point, but they must be carefully customised. Your organisation should understand the content, ensure it reflects actual operations and implement the processes described.
Does purchasing templates guarantee registration?
No. Audit outcomes and registration decisions depend on your organisation’s individual circumstances, applicable registration groups, implementation, evidence and assessment. No documentation provider can guarantee that an organisation will pass an audit or receive registration.
When should I start preparing?
Begin as early as possible. This gives you time to customise documents, implement systems, train workers, collect evidence, complete an internal audit and correct gaps before your auditor begins reviewing your organisation.
Prepare with more clarity
Your Certification Audit should not be the first time you test your compliance systems.
Build your documentation, put it into practice and organise the evidence you will need to explain how your organisation delivers safe, consistent and participant-centred supports.
